MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM:
Middle School is a transitional time between Elementary School and High School. Students at the Middle Grades. Each year of Riverside Preparatory School Middle School Program is designed with this transition in mind. Naturally, Sports, band, a wide array of electives, and a number of well supervised extracurricular activities are a part of the Middle School Program.
Sixth grade students have the same Core teacher for English and History and a different teacher for both Science and Math. This core teacher program makes sure that the student does not get “lost” by having too many teachers. Sixth grade students dress out for Physical Education which is taught by a certificated PE teacher. In addition students in the sixth grade take a class in Spanish Culture to compliment their previous elementary Spanish instruction and to better prepare them for serious Spanish language study at the high school level. All sixth grade students have a course called “Academic Seminar.” This class provides instruction in study habits, computer skills, and an opportunity to complete unfinished classwork. Sixth grade students take either band or a music class (choir or music) as well as an additional elective to round out the student’s academic schedule.
Seventh and Eighth grade students have single teachers for each class. Classes include English, Writing and Grammar (7th grade), Spanish (8th grade), Mathematics (Usually Pre-Algebra in 7th grade and Algebra in 8th grade), History, Science, and PE. As with sixth grade all students have a course called “Academic Seminar.” This class provides instruction in study habits, computer skills, and an opportunity to complete unfinished classwork. Sixth grade students take either band or a music class (choir or music) as well as an additional elective or two to round out the student’s academic schedule.
HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM:
High School students work on a highly academic and rigorous schedule. All high school students select a major area of study in addition to their core courses. Students may select from drama, creative writing, engineering, applied mathematics, biological science, chemistry, world history, and American history. Students spend seven hours a week working on major projects. All courses that can be offered as Advanced Placement courses (AP) are offered in that format. High School Students who are on the honor roll (3.2 or better) may take Student Directed Time (SDT). SDT allows the student to relax on campus in the student union or on one of the benches spread throughout the campus. they may use this time as they please. All other students take Academic Seminar.
In addition high school students engage in athletics (both intramural & interscholastic), ASB, drama, band (Marching & Jazz), Choir, Piano, art, and a wide array of electives.
